Flatulence: Friend or Foe?

Whoever smelt it dealt it! Whoever describe it applied it! Can you recall when someone used one of these rhymes to assign the blame?? I remember my junior high school days when these accusations were commonly used towards the person who was flatulence-guilty.

Growing up in an Italian Jewish household, my family was extremely relaxed and downright supportive of our flatulence. I personally feel that the concept of farting is a simple enjoyment in life. I also now understand a bit more of the physiology behind digestion, and would rather stick to a few puffs of wind throughout the day.

When you think about it, all of us fart; some more than others and some a lot less. The funny thing about it is that our flatulence is something we all have in common! (yes, you too) I enjoyed reading a recent post on an online forum recently that read: “It’s what makes us human, humbles us, and reminds us that we are all the same.”

But, have you considered the health of your body after getting a whiff of that atrocious aroma?

You might notice that your cheeks are tooting a bit too often throughout the day. Is this flatulence a sign of good health? I feel that flatulence is a normal occurrence within our daily physiological rhythms, but excessive crop dusting and rancid SBD’s can definitely be a finger pointing towards poor food choices, internal stress & inflammation, and a suffering GI/digestive system.

Let me place more emphasis on the health aspect here; to support you when your flatulence gets a bit winded.

Your flatulence gets funky for a handful of reasons…

  • Processed foods
  • Too many cellulose based foods
  • Cruciferous veggies (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc)
  • Beans, wheat, grains (hard to digest carbs)
  • Protein powders and highly processed supplements
  • Vegetable oils, excessive nuts & seeds
  • Too much muscle meat vs. easy to digest proteins
  • Stress (mental, emotional, physical)
  • Alcohol, drugs, toxins, etc
  • Gut dysbiosis (internal imbalances)
  • A lethargic overall metabolism = a sluggish GI/digestive system

You now have thoroughly heard me spill the beans about my personal opinion on flatulence. I used to think that farting every five minutes was healthy and quite entertaining. Well, I do still feel it’s very entertaining.

Is your flatulence a friend or a foe?

It can occasionally be considered a friend; when you simply need a gentle release or when you are bonding with your friend.  Your flatulence can be inconvenient during long airplane rides and can also be a finger pointing towards serious digestive problems. It’s a normal thing to feel, smell, and hear at times, but begin to pay attention to how often you cut the cheese, alongside its dainty or daunting smell, and I’ll let you be the judge of how optimal your body is operating.
